O beloved...
Oh, why did my crazy soul begin to fly?
Oh, where did this courage come from?
O beloved...
 These sweet words were sung in Hindi ..... O Re Priya ... basically describe the entire movie written and directed by Maam shahab, Yasmin Ahmad.
Talentime, on the facade, brings a simple High School Musical perception for the simple masses, but in depth, an entire cultural struggle all together. Addressing the issues of upholding one's roots while adapting with something that never dies throughout time, LOVE.
Yasmin has successfully present herself as the communicator of love in various aspect, through all of her works. Love for one another, love for your parents, love for your country, love for music, love for beautiful poetries, and most of all, Love For God.
Talentime, which opens in Malaysian cinemas on this coming March 26, has a breed of newcomers such as Mahesh Jugal Kishor, Pamela Chong, Howard Hon Kahoe and Jaclyn Victor. However, film veterens like Azean Irdawaty actually accentuates these characters. Having said that, do pay extra attention to the remarkably convincing performance by Sukania Venugopal. Also expect a slightly new appearances made by some familiar faces like Harith Iskandar, Ida Nerina, Mislina Mustaffa and Adibah Noor.
This balance of new comers and veterens provided the solid foundation of the whole movie. There are spontaneous humour in between the lines, sort of like Yasmin's signature if you pay attention to her previous works. Fair to say, watching her films, you have to pay extra attention to not be left out in anything, be it comedy, drama or just, feeling the emotions played by each character, because everything comes at once, and spontaneously.
"Talentime" is also nominated for the SIGNIS Award at the 33rd Hong Kong International Film Festival. All the best for Maam Director.
Working in a multi-cultural & multi-nationality office, my perception in life matures, thanks to fellow colleagues. When my Chinese colleague said 'InsyaAllah' and when my Bengali colleague praised 'Subhanallah', all I can think is 'Alhamdulillah' for the respect I get to experience from and for all religion. In the Koran, it has been said, "To me, my religion, and to you, yours". Respect comes when we show love and accepting one another.
And this is what Talentime is all about. Respect, Love and Life.
